Pure Honey: How to Choose It, Store It and Enjoy It Every Day

Honey is one of the oldest sweet foods in the world, and it still has a place in almost every Hyderabadi kitchen — in morning warm water, in chai, over Talbeenah or simply by the spoon. Here is a simple guide to choosing, storing and enjoying it.

What does “pure honey” mean?

Pure honey is just honey — nothing added. No sugar syrup, no jaggery syrup, no flavours. The colour, aroma and thickness change with the flowers the bees visited, so two jars of real honey can look quite different.

Why did my honey turn thick or grainy?

Crystallisation is a natural process. Honey is rich in natural sugars, and in cooler weather some of them form tiny crystals. It does not mean the honey has gone bad. Place the closed jar in a bowl of warm (not boiling) water and stir — it will turn liquid again.

How to store honey

  • Keep the lid tightly closed — honey absorbs moisture from the air.
  • Store at room temperature, away from direct sunlight. The fridge is not needed.
  • Always use a clean, dry spoon.

Simple ways to enjoy honey

  • A teaspoon in warm water with lemon in the morning
  • Drizzled over Talbeenah, oats, curd or fruit
  • As a sweetener in chai, milk and homemade lemonade
  • In marinades, dressings and baking

A note of care

Honey should not be given to babies under 12 months of age. Honey is a sugar, so enjoy it in sensible amounts as part of a balanced diet.
