What is Talbeenah?
Talbeenah (also written Talbina) is a soft porridge made by cooking barley flour in milk or water. Its name comes from laban (milk) because of its creamy, milk-white look. It has been eaten for centuries in Arab and South Asian homes and is remembered as a Sunnah food — something families in Hyderabad still prepare during Ramadan and for loved ones who need a gentle, nourishing meal.
How to prepare
- Mix 2 tablespoons (about 20 g) of Talbeenah in 1 cup (250 ml) of milk or water.
- Cook on a low flame for 8–10 minutes, stirring, until thick and creamy.
- Sweeten with honey or dates, and add dry fruits if you like. Serve warm.
Ingredients
Barley flour (jau).
Storage
Store in a cool, dry place in an airtight container. Keep away from moisture.
